Many people, especially “empty nester” couples whose children have moved out, often call and ask us about tankless water heaters. Typical questions include “Are they really efficient?” and “Will they save on water and heating bills?”
As the Greater Toronto Area’s premier installer of tankless water heaters since 1992, our response to both questions is an enthusiastic “Yes!”
Tankless Water heaters, also called “on-demand water heaters,” provide hot water where you need it, when you need it, without a storage tank. They normally use gas, electricity, or propane as a heat source, and some studies indicate they may cut water heating bills by up to 20 percent. But where does the real cost savings come in? Another good question — by eliminating standby losses; in other words, energy wasted by warmed water sitting around unused in a tank.
Over the last 20 years, we’ve installed too many tankless water heaters to count, but they can be placed anywhere hot water is needed – directly on a wall near a shower or sink, hidden in a closet, or placed beneath a sink or cabinetry. Some systems are large enough and efficient enough to provide on-demand hot water for an entire household.
There are many models to choose from, but we like to remind customers of a few advantages. First, they save space; secondly, tankless water heaters may last longer than conventional tank models because of less corrosion; and finally, they can provide unlimited hot water as long as they work within their capacity.
